Mucus In stool Causes

Mucus in stool can be considered as normal sometimes. The intestines happen to produce mucus to maintain a properly lubricated inner intestine region and bits of the mucus can be eliminated through bowel movements. Sudden increases of mucus in stool have to be noted, though, and it might be a necessity to look for medical treatment if there is too much of it.

The presence of mucus in stools can be disturbing for the individual that may not be familiar for the reasons behind the appearance of mucus in stools. There are several reasons why mucus may appear in one's stools including hemorrhoid formation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Colitis, obstructions, Crohn's Disease, and infections. By understanding the causes of mucus in stools an individual can be better prepared to deal with the situation when it arises.

Mucus is a white, clear, or yellowish substance that appears to have a jelly-like consistency and is produced by various parts of the body. In the case of the colon, it is produced by the mucus membrane and serves to protect the colon and help with the passage of feces throughout the body and out the anus.

If you do find mucus in your stool don't panic. It doesn't necessarily mean you have a problem. Mucus is produced due to the natural function of your large intestine in order to help move the waste through your colon and to trap tiny foreign bodies. Having said that it is not uncommon to find increased amounts of mucus in the stool when you do have problems because your digestive system produces it as a protective measure.

Causes:

Constipation/Hard Stools: Quite often people who suffer from mucus in the stools will also have hard stools. The reason being that their bowels are dehydrated. There are numerous causes for this, however one of the easiest solutions is to take a magnesium supplement to increase bowel hydration.

Food Allergies/Gluten Sensitivity: For many people sticky, mucus filled stools are a result of bowel problems which are caused by food allergens in the diet. The most common cause of this are dairy and wheat based foods in the diet.

Candida: Put simply this is a yeast that lives in just about everyone, however in some people it can become a problem. For some it will overgrow and cause something known as candidiasis or chronic candida.

If you experience a green bowel movement, it is not that major issue. There are basically two main causes of green bowel movement

• It might be due to something that you have consumed like huge amounts of leafy vegetables like lettuce or broccoli or eating large amounts of artificial coloring that is found in processed foods. It may be due to the iron supplements too.

• The other reason is that there is now a difference in the gut transit time.

Various different infections have also been cited as sources of too much mucus in stool. If a person gets an infection, it would be vital to look for medical attention so the infection can be addressed properly with antibiotics. After the infection gets treated, the excess mucus in stool is going to subside.
